It is developing as a hub for service industries such as IT and finance, with the new Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC).
Dubai's economy was built on the oil industry, revenues from oil and natural gas currently account for less than 6% of the emirate's revenues.
The government has set up industry-specific free zones throughout the city. Dubai Internet City, now combined with Dubai Media City as part of TECOM (Dubai Technology, Electronic Commerce and Media Free Zone Authority) is one such enclave whose members include IT firms such as EMC Corporation, Oracle Corporation, Microsoft, and IBM, and media organisations such as MBC, CNN, Reuters, ARY and AP. Dubai Knowledge Village (KV) is an education and training hub is also set up to complement the Free Zones other two clusters, Dubai Internet City and Dubai Media City, by providing the facilities to train the clusters' future knowledge workers. Internet access is restricted in most areas of Dubai with a proxy server filtering out sites deemed to be against cultural and religious values of the UAE - this includes any .il (Israeli) domains. However, areas served by TECOM (an internet service provider) are currently not filtered.

Visitor's Visa Information for the United Arab Emirates

Dubai Visa Information

Visa Requirements
The requirements of obtaining a tourism visa to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and its seven emirates (Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, and Fujairah) are that your passport is valid for at least 6 months before your arrival. The visa is a 30-day visa that is issued to individuals intending to spend less than 30 days in the UAE and who are unable to obtain a visit visa. A tourist visa can be issued by the hotel that you are staying in or through a local travel company. The visa normally takes a week to be issued, but it can also be issued urgently within 2 to 3 working days.

Visit Visas
Visit visas are issued to individuals intending to stay over 30 days in the United Arab Emirates. The list below contains countries that don't require a visit visa before entering the UAE, and can obtain visa on arrival at an airport, border, or entry point, which is valid for 60 days.
GCC residents with high level professions (managers, doctors, engineers, etc) can also obtain a visit visa on arrival. Alternatively, a visit visa can be applied for through a tourist company.

Service Visas (Entry Service Permit)
A service visa is a 14-day visa that can be issued by a United Arab Emirates hotel or tourist company, intending for visitors who plan to spend less than 2 weeks in the UAE.

Other Tourism Visas
A transit visa is a 4-day (96 hour) visa that can be utilized by transit travellers who would like to spend their transit hours or days outside of a UAE aiport terminal. Its emirate's main city, sometimes called "Dubai City" to distinguish it from the emirate.
Dubai is the most populous and second largest emirate of the UAE after Abu Dhabi. Dubai is distinct from other members of the UAE in that revenues from oil account for only 6% of its gross domestic product. A majority of the emirate's revenues are from tourism.
Dubai has become world famous place through innovative real estate projects, sports events, conferences and Guinness records. However, this increased attention, coinciding with its emergence as a world business hub have also highlighted potential human rights quagmires concerning its largely immigrant workforce.

Dubai

‘Ambitious’ is the best way to describe Dubai UAE and it’s definitely an understatement! Preceding the massive oil strike in the mid-1960's, Dubai UAE was a simple destination home to modest Bedouin clans and other settlements living around the main creek in the emirate, the backbone of society in those times. Ruled by the UK until the mid 20th century, Dubai travel was done mainly by camel with little infrastructure and no running water. In those days a Dubai vacation was not much of an option for any travelers, even the most intrepid.

Dubai World Trade Centre

The Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) was established to stimulate trade and commerce in the United Arab Emirates in 1979.
